I am a patient and a diligent person. Time management and multitasking are some of my best
abilities. As I have worked with children previously, I would like to strengthen my skills further in the education aspect of teaching after graduation. In today's society children crave technology which is why technology should be used as a great teaching resource. Since there are countless forms of technology students need to properly know when and how to use them so they do not get overwhelmed, yourself included. As I enter the classroom I want to be able to keep my students focused by integrating unique, and interesting uses of media and digital literacy. My experience with children has been centered outside the classroom which has allowed me to use technology on a regular basis. I am hoping with my various skills ranging from collaboration and organization along with my computer proficiency will guide me on the right path to collecting enough information to aid my students in discovering self-identity through media literacy.
I may not be able to rebuild a computer but I can navigate my way around the web, and I am working on getting to know the ins and outs of Web 2.0. Students want to be able to relate to their teachers, and to do that teachers need to start incorporating their students' interests into the curriculum. For a lot of students their interests revolve around Facebook, Twitter and Instgram, all of which I would consider myself an &advanced user& in those fields. I know, not too sure if that is something to broadcast. On the other hand Adobe Photoshop became one of my favorite programs after I took a course at Lakehead University for the program. As a result of my interest in photoshop I just signed up for a Smartboard workshop which I know will help me immensely in the 21st century classroom. Technology has immersed itself in our society and we need to be aware of its impact. I must admit I do spend a lot of time on the web, be it Reddit or Tumblr, communities that are all about spreading news, giving me a differing view of the world. Students need to know that they cannot take media at face value and it is the responsibility of teachers and parents alike to help them interpreted the world around them so they are able to develop their own sense of self and a proper identity.
The social networking world is becoming bigger, better and badder all the time and it is becoming more difficult to be able to distinguish which ones will aid in positive discovery and which ones to be weary of. Safety should be the number one priority, especially when students are first introduced to the Internet. In addition to safety, the ability to spot a bias is important, not only on the Web but in all media forms.
